INTERVIEW WITH DOUG SCOTT

This project documents Anais Reiss’s and my conversation with graphic designer and educator Douglass Scott in the form of a newspaper publication, exploring his views on structure, belief, and the evolution of design. Scott has been teaching since 1973 and is widely respected for his long-standing contributions to design education and practice—he spent 35 years as design director at WGBH Boston and has designed over 200 books. The layout uses visible InDesign grids as a key design element—turning the invisible framework of the page into part of the storytelling. Inspired by Scott’s architectural background and emphasis on process, the design mirrors the systems he talks about, revealing the scaffolding behind graphic design decisions while also highlighting moments of intuition, empathy, and craft.
